Back to Historical Basics: The Use of Asbestos in Plastics and Rubber
I remember a meeting with a friend sometime during 2010ish in which he stated “What do you mean using asbestos in plastics? That never happened.” My response was “I have a book from 1966 entitled Asbestos with Plastics and Rubber which begs to differ with you.” After he read the book, opinions gave way to facts and my friend was better educated.
Now, I could have shown my friend other books illustrating the use of asbestos in plastics, but this little 148 page dynamo of information is a pure academic book originally written by a German academic Hans Berger and translated into English by an ultimate lifelong academician and very well respected chemist Ralph Edward Oesper at the University of Cincinnati. He even looks like a professional professor.
As an example, his discussion on chrysotile asbestos, glass, etc. in one page is a better description than many books with devoted chapters.
For those of you who would like to see the Index, especially if you believe that your asbestos exposure or that of a loved one was from working with plastics or rubber products, I have provided it below:
This book is very expensive over the Internet, but I have managed to snag a couple of hard copy versions from Amazon and eBay at reasonable prices. Let me know if you might be interested in borrowing a copy for your own personal research.
Hopefully, this was useful. I would appreciate any and all comments to be directed to me at TheAsbestosBlog@gmail.com or posted as a comment to this blog. I will do my best to respond.

As always Mavis, you are a source of information and inspiration.
Every say is a school day…with you it’s more like a university day ?
Gary, I fully agree about Mavis. She is one of a kind. Marty
Where can I obtain a a copy?
Hello I would like to know where I can obtain a copy? Thank you!
Hi Martin. I can lend you a hard copy if you email your mailing address to me at TheAsbestosBlog@gmail.com and agree to return it within a couple of weeks. If you want to buy a copy, they periodically come up on Amazon or eBay. I have never located an electronic version.
Marty
Hi Marty, thank you for the generous offer. I wanted to buy a copy for my business partner who, well let me put it this way – goes on vacation to visit asbestos mines! He has been involved in the asbestos field since the late 80’s and is going to retire one of these days and I thought is would make a nice addition to his collection. I will monitor the various sites who may have it such as amazon (I already checked and it was not available). Regards from Alaska!
