Asbestos in 1910: Fritz Cirkel Goes Wild

Fritz Cirkel followed up his 1905 book (see my blog from last week) with an amazingly expanded and comprehensive book in 1910 entitled Chrysotile Asbestos: Its Occurrence, Exploitation, Milling, and Uses. If the 1905 book was a Master’s Thesis in asbestos, the 1910 book is the full blown PhD in asbestos and drafted to cover the topic worldwide. The book is easily available to download off a number of Internet sites and hard copies are available for either a private purchase or to obtain a book loan from a library. As an example, see https://books.google.com/books?id=NOXNAAAAMAAJ&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false.

If you are serious about learning early 1900s asbestos history on a global basis, this is a must have book for your library. If you just like pretty pictures, this book is also filled with those.

Cirkel devoted a lot of space and resources to asbestos throughout the world, and not just Canada.

As to pictures, below are but a small sample.

In a couple of hours, just scanning this book over a cup of coffee (careful not to spill) will open your eyes to how asbestos became so popular and its relationship to the world.

Let me know what you think of the book either by email to ThisAsbestosBlog@gmail.com or in the comments. Thanks. Marty

  1. The pages you shared from this book are super interesting. My friend and I own an asbestos removal company together and my great aunt is dealing with mesothelioma, so the origins of asbestos are particularly intriguing to me. Thanks for sharing this!

My prayers and thoughts to your great aunt. Even though my Dad’s passing from Meso was long ago (in 1981), I still think of it often.
I am glad that you found it intriguing and informative. Marty
