Are You Renovating a House Built in 1877? Might that Last Layer of Paint that you are scraping off the Bare Wood have Asbestos? You Bet.
This blog is a little short as I am still focusing on my research thesis entitled “Asbestos-Related Issues Impacting Bangladesh Shipbreaking Laborers.” I should complete that project within a couple of weeks.
For this blog, let’s talk paint. I happen to have a H.W. Johns’ manual from March 1, 1877 (yes, over 150 years ago) that focuses on asbestos paints, including the color palette. The paints were recommended both for commercial and residential uses. Interesting stuff.
If you happen to have a roof, boiler coverings, steam packing, or coatings and cements remaining from 1877, they might also include asbestos fibers.
I always find this type of history fascinating. How about you? Let me know what you think either by leaving a comment or sending me an email to TheAsbestosBlog@gmail.com. Thank you. Marty

Was the paint really as good as they said?
Greg, I presume so from a quick Google search. Note the discussion on asbestos paints at https://www.dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/employee-health-safety/repository/Asbestos.pdf. Marty
