Asbestos-Related Issues Impacting Bangladesh Shipbreaking Laborers: My Research Thesis.
My second of three research thesis is now complete and at my professor for grading and feedback. The title is “Asbestos-Related Issues Impacting Bangladesh Shipbreaking Laborers” and you may find a full copy at https://theasbestosblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Asbestos-Bangladesh-Shipbreaking-582023.pdf. The paper is thirty eight pages not including the Bibliography because, after all, there are a lot of asbestos-related issues that impact Bangladesh shipbreaking laborers. Please feel free to circulate a copy among your friends and those people who might have an interest in the topic.
Thirty eight pages is a lot to read but, then again, those involved on the beaches of Bangladesh in this industry work hard in the face of difficult odds to succeed. I hope that my discussion captures the extent of their labors in addition to the challenges faced by the government, the owners of the shipbreaking organizations, and all other stakeholders. I believe that the world-systems analysis in combination with the normalization of deviance concept explains what is really going on and why the system itself is unlikely to change. With this in mind, and relying on objective concepts or equity and justice, I recommend some alternatives for protection and compensation.
I don’t mean to throw stones at companies based in the United States, but many of them have become experts at hiding their identities and sweeping the profits off the table. Take a look at “New data on end-of-life vessels reveals U.S. shipowners are among the worst dumpsters worldwide” by Keith Barker in 2020 at https://www.recyclingproductnews.com/article/32942/new-data-on-end-of-life-vessels-reveals-us-shipowners-are-among-the-worst-dumpers-worldwide, and see whether you agree with me that the United States court system should, at the least, provide some protection for the shipbreaking laborers.
I very much look forward to your feedback and thoughts on my paper. If you are interested in checking out my first research thesis which analyzed whether the Space Shuttle Challenger’s 1986 tragedy was caused by an asbestos substitute that failed, you can find it at https://theasbestosblog.com/?p=10618.
If you have an interest in my anticipated third (and final for my Masters in History) research thesis, it will likely be on how climate change has affected non-occupational asbestos inhalation and diseases, and how future climate changes, such as those causing soil weathering, may continue to increase such exposure and diseases in certain parts of the world. Presuming that I can pull off the technical aspects, I anticipate that such a paper will take me until Spring 2024.
Thank you and let me know what you think either by sending me an email at TheAsbestosBlog@gmail.com or by leaving a comment. Marty
